THE T-LEVELS HUB
Making accurate and appropriate measurements
Students must understand the benefits of accurate and appropriate measurement of built environment performance
Measure your Wates site cabin and car park using a trundle wheel and DISTO (laser distance measurer).
Refer to the cabin drawing provided as a platform to then create your drawing on A3 paper with measurements.
Part 2
Measurement
Review task 3.1 – (In resource Library) floor finishes drawing and measure the following items of flooring.
- Barrier matting
- Carpet Tiling
- Check and confirm if your measures are the same as those within the Bill of Quantities.
OUTPUT
To complete cabin and car park drawing on A3 paper, Floor finishes measurement and submit using the form at the bottom of the page. Please refer to the Resources provided below to help with this task.Resource Library for Task 1
Part 1
- To explain the differences between Civil Engineering Standards and International Construction Measurement Standards
Part 2
Subcontractor Comparison
- Refer to the ‘Subcontractor comparison’ excel template for floor finishes and the 3 Quotations received. Using the information on the quotations, put the correct rates (cost for each element of flooring) into the spreadsheet, so you can see what the total cost for the works is from each subcontractor.
- Taking each item individually, work out the lowest rate (column L) and average rate (column N) and the effect this has on the total cost for the floor finish in line 123.
- Use the average rate and highlight any rate that looks very low or very high in comparison.
- Once the above stages are complete, state which Subcontractor you would propose to use for the works and why (*for this exercise base your decision on price alone)
*In practice, other considerations such as local proximity to the site, performance and support to deliver social and Environmental KPIs should also be considered when choosing a subcontractor
OUTPUT
To produce a table to compare the two standards above and to complete task workings in Part 2 and present the proposal. Please submit using the form at the bottom of the page. Please refer to the Resources provided below to help with this task.Resource Library for Task 2
Develop the previous table 3.2 to provide an overview of what the standards below mean, the pros and cons of each, and which ones are best to use in which scenarios.
- New Rules of Measurement: NRM1, NRM2, NRM3.
- Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement, Fourth Edition (CESMM4).
- International Construction Measurement Standards (ICMS).
- Application of measurement standards and rules for taking off quantities – bills of quantities, tendering and estimating budgets, and costs.
- Discuss with a site QS how these have been applied on your Wates site
