Bekir Andrews
Environmental Sustainability Director, Wates

Bekir Andrews, CENV, Fellow of IEMA, is Wates Group's Environmental Sustainability Director. He is responsible for leading Wates Group's sustainability strategy. He has a wealth of practical knowledge and experience in the construction sector. He has been instrumental in setting Wates Group’s ESG KPIs with Lloyds Bank, AIB and HSBC for a £90 million revolving credit facility - the second largest sustainable linked loan in the UK construction industry to date.
Prior to joining Wates, he worked at Balfour Beatty where he led on various innovation projects, such as the UK's first successful engine retrofit to be approved by the Energy Saving Trust, working in partnership with Eminox, HS2, and the Centre for Low Emission Construction as well as the development of social value metrics for Asian and US market. He is currently leading on Wates' science-based target and TCFD commitments whilst driving carbon and waste reductions and improving biodiversity.
He is an active member of both the Climate Change Steering Group and Fellows Group for the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), as well as sitting on the Sustainability Stakeholder Panel for Saint-Gobain. He regularly participates in government consultations and has recently helped shape the latest edition of the government’s construction playbook.
Helen Bunch
Executive Managing Director, Wates Residential

As Executive Managing Director for Wates Residential, Helen is passionate about people and places the individuals and families that live in the homes we build and the communities we create. With a background encompassing corporate governance and customer relations, she is expert at building and maintaining trust, forging long-term relationships, and is driven to deliver outcomes through our placemaking skills and expertise that customers and communities need, because everyone deserves a great place to live.
Helen has been part of Wates Group for over 15 years, and as a member of the Executive Committee she upholds and drives forward the firm’s purpose and behaviours. As part of this she plays a major role in leading the Race & Ethnicity and Wates Women networks to build racial and ethical inclusion and improve retention of women in the business, supporting them to fulfil their potential along the way.
Former to her senior role at Wates Residential, she headed up Wates Smartspace and prior to Wates Helen spent 17 years with ICI, working across the globe. Outside of Wates she is passionate about the arts, which involves being a theatre trustee to support minority interests in London, and she is also a Non-Exec Director of Morgan Advanced Materials Plc.
Paul Chandler
Executive Managing Director, Wates Construction Group

Paul Chandler joined the Wates Group board in 2018 and has overall accountability for the Wates Construction Group.
Paul’s expertise has been shaped across a construction career over nearly 40 years, notable for delivering profitable growth, together with leadership of businesses that have delivered some of the industry’s most recognisable and iconic projects.
Since joining Wates in 2017, Paul has strengthened performance within the Wates Construction Group and, as part of driving the business to deliver the Group’s 2025 strategy, has overseen the development of a national footprint for Construction and SES Engineering Services.
Paul is passionate about creating an inclusive workforce and sponsors diversity and inclusion across the Wates Group. He is also a Wates supporter for the Young Women’s Trust and represents Wates on the Construction Leadership Council, and the All-Parliamentary Group for Regeneration and Development.
John Dunne
Group Safety, Health, Environment, Quality, and Sustainability Director, Wates

John joined Wates in April 2015 and in that time has been responsible for leading a company-wide Safety, Health and Wellbeing behavioural transformation programme, embedding a culture of good decision making throughout the organisation. Wates’ health and safety record today is widely acknowledged as industry leading.
He also has line responsibility for the Quality Assurance, Environmental and Sustainability teams.
Before arriving at Wates, John spent 15 years at Balfour Beatty within various lead Health, Safety and Sustainability roles eventually leading the global HSE function across 17 different countries. He has over 20 years’ experience as a HSE Professional; across manufacturing, major construction, engineering, and consultancy. John is passionate about protecting life above and below water and ensuring that we positively enhance the communities that we work within.
Prior to entering the construction industry in 1997, John spent ten years in the Royal Navy as a Diver working on civil and marine engineering tasks as well as Bomb Disposal, Mine Clearance and Underwater Special Forces.
John is a Chartered Member of the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health. He is married with four children.
Dame Judith Hackett DBE
Former Chair of the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety

Dame Judith Hackitt, a former Chair of the UK Health and Safety Executive, was commissioned by the government to review building regulations and fire safety following the Grenfell Tower fire. She published her Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety in May 2018.
Dame Judith is Chair of manufacturing trade body Make UK (formerly EEF). She also holds non-executive positions at HS2 Ltd, Made Smarter Commission, Imperial College Court, City & Guilds Group, and High Value Manufacturing Catapult.
An engineer by profession, Dame Judith holds a degree in chemical engineering from Imperial College, London.
Simon Potter
Group Commercial Director, Wates

Simon Potter was appointed Group Commercial Director in July 2018.
He joined Wates in 1989 and has held a number of key roles within the business including most recently as Commercial Director for Wates Construction, where he had overall commercial responsibility for all construction projects both pre and post contract, across the UK overseeing a team of 400 surveyors.
Simon works closely with our clients to overcome problems and define commercially viable solutions for their businesses, bringing extensive knowledge of all contractual forms, construction techniques and procurement types.
Christopher Read
Head of Construction & Standards, Lloyds Banking Group

Chris is a property professional with extensive experience and knowledge in the UK fit out and construction market. He has experience in delivery of large-scale delivery of portfolio construction management across a 20year + career in industry across many of the private sector UK principal owner occupiers.
Chris has a current focus on increasing the value obtained from the Lloyds Banking Group Investment Plan across the portfolio of over 1500 locations including data centres, office buildings and retail branches.
Responsible for delivery of the Group’s significant property change programmes in a safe, timely and effective manner through the management of construction partners and specialists, Chris leads a small team of construction professionals accountable for the management of the c£200m annual investment plan impacting the estate across the UK.
Chris joined Lloyds Banking Group in 2017, from industry, having worked in contracting and consulting for many years. He has been a Director and Partner in a major UK construction consultancy and is a member into the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, qualifying in June 2001.
Philip Wainwright
Interim Chief Executive, Wates

Philip Wainwright was appointed Interim Chief Executive in July 2022. He joined Wates as Chief Financial Officer in December 2018 and sits on both the Group Board and the Executive Committee.
Formerly Group Finance Director at Wilmott Dixon, Philip has a degree in mechanical engineering and began his career as a graduate engineer with Balfour Beatty, before qualifying as a chartered accountant with Ernst & Young. He has over 20 years of experience in the construction industry in both senior financial and operational roles, including at Byrne Group, Laing O’Rourke, Biwater Plc, National Grid and ED&F Man.
Philip is married with four children and lives in Kent.
Chelsea Walters
Group Legal Director, Wates

Chelsea Walters is Legal Director for the Wates Group, responsible for the Group Legal team.
Chelsea joined Wates in 2011 from the Energy, Projects and Construction legal team at CMS Cameron McKenna, having begun her career at Clifford Chance. She is a solicitor specialising in construction law and throughout her career has advised developers, funders, and contractors on a wide range of construction contracts.
Sir James Wates CBE

Sir James Wates has worked for the Wates Group since 1983. He has been Chairman since 2013 and on the board since 1997.
Outside of the company, James is Chairman of the Institute for Family Business and a Non-executive Director of Argent Services LLP. He has served in the past as Chairman of the BRE (Building Research Establishment) Trust, CBI Construction Council, the Construction Industry Training Board, and Build UK.
Sir James feels passionately that good business, well done, is a force for good for society. In 2018 he was appointed by the Government to chair the coalition group developing corporate governance principles for large private companies (the so-called ‘Wates Principles’).
In 2012 he was awarded the CBE and in 2019 was knighted for services to business and to charity.
Jonny Wates
Director, Wates

Jonny was appointed to the Wates Group Board in 2008, having previously served as Group Head of Strategy and Sales Director of Wates Homes Ltd. He is a Trustee of the Wates Family Enterprise Trust and the William Wates Memorial Trust. He chairs the Board Sustainability Committee and champions sustainability at a strategic and an operational level.
Previously, Jonny was Founder and Chairman of the renewable energy start up Myriad Cleaner Energy Generation, and he began his career as brand manager at International Distillers & Vintners (now Diageo).
Outside of Wates, Jonny holds a range of positions including: Vice Chair of Polaris Family Business Network International; an Advisory Board Member for the Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformations; a member of the Advisory Council of Commonland; a Trustee of Forum for the Future; an Associate at Leaders’ Quest; and an Ambassador of the World Benchmarking Alliance.
He has an MBA from the Cranfield University School of Management and a Masters’ degree in Sustainability and Leadership from the University of Cambridge.
Jonny is passionate about encouraging biodiversity in the city as a way to raise awareness of climate change, promote community cohesion and create a harmonious relationship between humanity and nature.

David Morgan
Executive Managing Director, Wates Property Services

David is Executive Managing Director of Wates Property Services. He joined Wates in January 2014, following a successful career in senior leadership roles in the support services sector.
A graduate of Warwick University, David was previously Group Managing Director for G4S’ Care and Justice business, a £325m turnover business, employing 5,000 people. Prior to this he was Business Development Director of BT Global Services’ Public Sector division, developing long term strategic partnerships and growing the business to over £500m.
As Executive Managing Director for Property Services, David is responsible for the leadership of our facilities management, and fit-out and refurbishment businesses, as well as our property maintenance division, which maintains over 500,000 social housing properties in England and Wales. He has a wealth of experience in working in partnership and joint ventures with housing associations and local authorities and is committed to delivering excellent value for money in addition to community regeneration for all our clients and residents.
David sits on the Wates Group Executive Committee, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Committee and Group Risk Committee.
Adam Robertson
Director, Exterior Plas

Adam is Director at Exterior Plas, a growing business, based in Essex, with customer experience at the heart, delivering a tailored service using the best quality materials to cater for councils, housing associations and the education sector.
Adam is a qualified Quantity Surveyor with 14 years’ experience working across main contractors, consultancy and sub-contract business models, ensuring all works are procured and delivered within budget. After qualifying at Anglia Ruskin University, Adam progressed to senior Quantity Surveying positions, including Commercial Director at Morgan Sindall.
Adam has ventured into contracting himself, merging with Exterior Plas Ltd after forming a strong relationship with owner Andy Sheen. Together they have successfully expanded their windows, doors and FM building division from London to Glasgow and Belfast.
Adam’s role is focused on supporting business growth, and Exterior Plas has recently begun a successful working relationship with Wates, via a long-term partnering agreement.
Angela Rushforth
Managing Director, BSS

Angela Rushforth is Managing Director of BSS, the UKs largest distributor of pipes, valves and fittings into the building services and industrial sectors. BSS is part of the Travis Perkins Group and Angela sits on the TP Group leadership team.
Angela joined the Travis Perkins Group in 2015 as Own Brand Director from leading independent builders merchant, Ridgeons, where she was Managing Director.
She then became Managing Director for Benchmarx, before leading the Group’s Business Transformation Programme.
Angela previously held Executive positions at Wolseley and Screwfix. She has over 20 years’ experience in retail and merchanting, and has a strong background in leading businesses, creating and driving business propositions and strategic initiatives.
Angela is the TP Group Diversity & Inclusion lead and established the TP Group gender balance network in 2019. The D&I networks now include Pride, Ability, Youth and ACE networks.
Angela is also Group sponsor for the TP Net Zero Carbon agenda.
Scott Shearing
Managing Director, Stortford Interiors

Scott has worked in the construction industry for the past 25 years, the majority of which have been at Stortford Interiors as a specialist sub-contractor.
His work has spanned both commercial and operational activities within the business and more latterly front-end preconstruction duties, business development and strategy formulation. This has given him an intimate and multi-faceted understanding not only of project demands but client expectations, market needs and macro-level challenges.
Scott was appointed to the Board in 2013 and has overseen projects garnering awards and the business becoming a reputable, agile, and respected supply chain member for its Tier One partners.
He was appointed Managing Director in February 2021 and is working with the Board to build a platform for sustainable, diverse, and innovative growth.
Nikunj Upadhyay
Inclusion and Diversity Director, Wates

Nikunj Upadhyay is the Group’s Inclusion and Diversity Director, responsible for the design and delivery of a multiyear strategy to help Wates be an inclusive and diverse business and an employer of choice for talent across all communities.
Prior to Wates, Nikunj worked for Accenture, Barclays, HSBC and Saint Gobain in a variety of HR roles contributing to the delivery of their human capital strategies towards the achievement of business objectives.
Outside of Wates, Nikunj is an Inclusion Board member at the Rugby Football League. The board has been established as part of the RFL’s commitment to diversity, inclusion, and anti-discrimination and will oversee progress of TACKLE IT – Rugby League versus Discrimination, the ambitious and far-reaching action plan which sets out how Rugby League will extend its reach and appeal, diversify its talent pool, improve its culture and actively deal with discrimination.
Nikunj has a master’s degree in Personnel Management from the University of Pune, India.
