THE T-LEVELS HUB

Design

Students must understand the benefits of good design, including delivering within budget, to product performance

TASK 1

Students to put together a presentation covering:

  1. Importance of good design focusing on energy efficiency – provide example buildings  of which are energy efficient
  2. How design can improve well-being and productivity – show research with sources
  3. Designing for efficiency – provide good and bad examples  of building design

The presentation should be focused on imagery, construction details and drawings, and real-life examples. Sources for all information should be referenced.

Site manager to arrange for T Level student to meet with the Design manager and explore how these points have been applied to their current site.

OUTPUT

Presentation to include 3 points above. Have a discussion with the Design Manager (to be arranged by the Site Manager) about how it relates to the current site.

TASK 2

Students to put together a presentation covering:
  1. Architectural thought processes and ideologies – using examples through history showing how architecture has evolved through to modern times
  2. The role of the contractor – how construction timescales have changed over time, including techniques for improving the speed of construction.
  3. Integration of building services – use a laboratory/hospital example to showcase your understanding  importance  of this.

The presentation should be focused on imagery, construction details and drawings, and real-life examples. Sources for all information should be referenced.

Discuss the presentation with the design manager (site manager to arrange) and explore how these points have been applied to your current site.

OUTPUT

To produce a PowerPoint presentation on the 3 above points. Please submit using the form at the bottom of the page. Please refer to the Resources provided below to help with this task.

TASK 3

Students to put together a report covering:

      • What is Net Zero Carbon and how do organisations seek to achieve it? Identify and explain three sustainable technologies and/or approaches that are currently being used.
      • Explain the role of the Government in the Net Zero Carbon agenda
      • Explain the difference between Embodied and Operational carbon
      • What is biodiversity and why is it important?
      • Explain the role of CDM Regulations (2015) and ‘Safe by Design’.
      • How are the above being explored and reported on your site? Speak to Site Manager or Sustainability Team for further information.

OUTPUT

To present this as written work in PowerPoint or Word Doc (Max 3000 words) – use examples. Sources for all information should be referenced.  Please  submit using the form at the bottom of the page. Please refer to the Resources provided below to help with this task.

TASK 4

Students to put together a report based on the host site covering:

  1. Functionality of design and construction (explain the function over form design consideration)
  2. The significance of “the site” and how this impacts design? (End users, location and purpose, etc)
  3. Consider:
  4. Sustainability
  5. Ground
  6. Utilities
  7. Temporary works
  8. Restrictions and rights
  9. Social constraints
  10. Neighbors’ rights – shared access, not being overlooked
  11. Local community objections
  12. Green space requirements
  13. Environmental requirements
  14. Mixed and balanced development.
  15. Explain the planning process in the UK (provide rough timelines for approval). Explain the five key considerations when looking for planning approval.
  16. Identify two alternative ways projects can be funded (Private and Public)
  17. Consider how budgets are prepared and then tracked.

Sources for all information should be referenced.

OUTPUT

To produce a report and submit using the form at the bottom of the page. Please refer to the Resources provided below to help with this task.

TASK 5

Students to produce a presentation on the considerations for and the importance of equality and inclusivity in design and construction.

 Consider the following points

  1.  Access
  2. Safety
  3. Community Engagement
  4. Visual Aesthetic
  5. Lighting and Acoustics
  6. Function – Ergonomics

OUTPUT

To produce a PowerPoint presentation on the above 6 points and submit using the form at the bottom of the page. Please refer to the Resources provided below to help with this task.

TASK 6

Students to produce a two-page case study on the importance of

  • Indoor Air Quality,
  • Thermal Comfort,
  • Lighting and Acoustics.

Provide examples of good and bad practices.

OUTPUT

To produce a 2-page case study on the above points and submit using the form at the bottom of the page. Please refer to the Resources provided below to help with this task.

TASK 7

To produce a markup of the RIBA Plan of Work (1 Page), identifying key stages and explaining the importance of each stage.

TASK 8

Students to put together a case study covering:

      1. Explain what the circular economy is and its role in the construction industry
      2. Provide examples of embodied carbon measurements for key materials
      3. Why is life cycle assessment important and how can it impact the project?

OUTPUT

To present as written work in Word or Powerpoint (Max 1500 words) – use examples. Sources for all information should be referenced. Please refer to the Resources provided below to help with this task.
