THE T-LEVELS HUB
Building Technologies
Students must understand construction methods used in residential, commercial, and industrial construction contexts, and be able to discriminate between methods and select appropriately
Research the following points below;
- What does sustainable energy mean to the built environment?
- Key considerations for new existing & new building solutions.
- State 5 different Wates builds and sustainable construction methods used on each site - ask a supervisor for help identifying sites.
Points to consider:
Use Wates in-house technical library, trade journals, and engineering bodies such as CIBSE, BSRIA, and IET to support learning.
Request with engineers if a site visit to the different projects could be arranged so that you can see installations where for example, renewable solutions have been installed.
OUTPUT
To produce a one-page MS Word document on points 1 and 2
Supervisor to organise a site visit with Community Investment Manager and School / College.
Please submit using the form at the bottom of the page. Please refer to the Resources provided below to help with this task.
Search the Web for Government Publications and legislation into Building Regulations, what they are, and why they are needed.
Search for webinars on UK Regulations and their application. Use these sessions to expand your knowledge and gain insight from other professionals in the industry, to embellish your understanding.
Using this information, have a discussion with the Project Manager / Site Manager on your site about:
- How building regulations are monitored and adhered to on this site;
- Any challenges meeting building regulations and how they have been overcome;
OUTPUT
Provide a summary of research carried out.
Discussion with Project Manager / Site Manager – please take notes.

Resource Library for Task 2
Student to find out what the British Standards Institute does and the benefits they bring to the industry.
Part 2
Students to research and establish what the ISO Standards are and how they differ from the British Standards.
Supervisor to pick 2 British standards or ISO Standards so that student can to record a short film of what they are and how they are implemented on site.
OUTPUT
To create a short recording of 1-2 mins on a mobile device, please refer to the link provided in library below.
Please submit using the form at the bottom of the page.
Resource Library for Task 3
To research the different types of manufacturers’ information supplied with products. Research the purpose of Operation & Maintenance manuals and requirements for manufacturers’ information being included for future system maintenance purposes by the end user.
Supervisor to provide examples of Operation & Maintenance manuals, review these to see the type of manufacturer information that is included.
Part 2
Explore via discussion with colleagues and/or consultant partners how such information is captured in the digital REVIT models that are produced for building designs and why this approach is widely used especially in public sector projects.
For assisted learning, consider exploring YouTube tutorials and BSRIA guidance documents.
OUTPUT
Discussion with Colleagues or Consultant partners – please take notes of the conversation.
